I happened to see a small snippet video on Instagram, which had a few actors like Mamooty on the stage and a young man giving a self-introduction speech. As it got my attention I choose to see the balance video. So, this young man was Mr. Barun Chandran aged 30’s the founder of Corporate 360 (now Dataforce) which I found later on the internet.
He started his speech with an introduction of his life story in a sarcastic tune proclaiming he belongs to a big entrepreneur family and his grandmother was a local arrack maker and sold arrack to farmworkers. Hearing this, the crowd came with a burst of laughter. He then claimed he became an entrepreneur because it is in his genes. Giving all credit to his grandmother “Shap ponnama”.(Arrack Ponnama).
Barun was born in a remote village, Padam in Kerala to a poor family. His father Mr. Bala Chandran worked as a log loader in the same village. At a young age, Barun used to deliver lunch for his father at his workplace, during those times his ambition was to become a great lorry driver because he says
I felt it was a lot more true, we always dream according to our exposures.
He later starts explaining about his grandfather who was a hardcore communist in his village, who always worked for its people and development. Coming from a poor background, education was a luxury for him. His mother who is literate and reads newspapers encouraged him to go to school and gain an education. Most of his education was at government schools.
Later his interest in sports got him into the school’s football team, playing for Kerala state, Kerala university football, and winning laurels. His thoughts on making big in football ended when he got a terrible shoulder injury. Which left him with a bleak future. Then his entrepreneur grandmother gave him her gold bangle and asked him to go somewhere and make his life.
He left his village and came to Bangalore with no degree to get a job and support living for his struggling family. He started giving interviews in BPO and got rejected in more than 45 companies because of his lack of communication in English. On the advice of his grandfather, he improved his English by reading books with a dictionary. After getting rejected in 45 interviews he knew all questions they ask and he prepared accordingly.
After lots of effort, he got 2 job offers from AOL and DELL BPO’s and he chose to work with DELL. He got trained, worked for a few months, and got fired because of his inability to communicate and understand technology. He again joined 2 more companies and got fired in 3 months. During this period he invested himself in spoken English classes and Java training with the salaries he made in his previous job.
Eventually, all his hard work paid off and he landed a 4th job with an SAP consulting company and within 3 months he was sent to the USA. From then on it was no turning back. After 6 years of life in the USA, he moved to Singapore to join Oracle. That is where he developed an idea to establish his company Corporate 360(now Dataforce).
I have explained only a few important parts of his life which fascinated me, but what really is important is how he established his company in his small village to help the macroeconomic of his village.
Barun Chandran established his company in his village, gave the job to the locals raised their standard of living. He developed a macroeconomic environment where people have to sustain well-paying jobs in their region. When people have a good salary they spend locally, that’s how a local economy is built
In recent times there are few corporate who are experimenting with these models like ZOHO’s founder Mr. Vembu. He started a satellite office in a village called Tenkasi, Tamilnadu sourcing local skills and developing them.
These people are developing their software products locally and selling internationally. By this method, the local economy grows to raise the living standard of the people.
Barun now lives in Singapore, enduring his life with more travel and working for startups in the advisory role and learning continuously in the Tech world.
Barun Chandran life story is not only about rags to the rich story but a story of a true comrade
Fascinating
