Tally vs Zoho Books (2026): What Real Users Say, What It Really Costs, and Which to Choose

October 29, 2026

Tally or Zoho Books is one of the first real decisions a small business owner in India makes. Ask ten people and you get ten opinions, usually from someone who has only ever used one of them.

So instead of one person’s view, this comparison pulls together what hundreds of verified users say on review platforms like G2 and Capterra, checks each claim against the official Tally and Zoho documentation, and adds a five-year cost calculation that most comparisons skip. At the end, there is a short note from our side as long-time Tally users.

The Short Answer

Tally suits trading and manufacturing businesses with real inventory, teams already fluent in it, and owners who want a one-time licence with data on their own computer. Zoho Books suits new and service-based businesses that want cloud access, a free starting plan and a modern interface. Both are rated almost identically by users, so the right choice depends on how your business works, not on which one is “better”.

What Real Users Say

On Capterra, both TallyPrime and Zoho Books sit at around 4.4 out of 5, with TallyPrime rated by a little over 200 users and Zoho Books by over 650. The ratings are close; what users praise and complain about is very different.

TallyPrime

What users like: it is fast once you learn the keyboard shortcuts, setup is simple, GST compliance is strong, and its inventory and financial reports are consistently praised. On G2, reviewers also rate its customer support higher than most competing Indian accounting software.

What users complain about: fewer integrations with third-party apps, a dated interface, difficulty getting data out of the system, and some users report it slowing down when several people work at once.

Zoho Books

What users like: a clean, easy interface, automation that saves time, helpful bank reconciliation suggestions, automatic GST calculations, good value for money, and smooth connection with other Zoho apps like CRM and Inventory.

What users complain about: customer support is the most common complaint, with some users finding it slow or limited. Others mention there is no offline mode, fewer integrations outside the Zoho family, and costs that climb as you add users or customisation.

Where They Actually Differ

 TallyPrimeZoho Books
Pricing modelOne-time licence or yearly rentalMonthly or annual subscription
Free planNoYes, for revenue under ₹25 lakh
InventoryStrong, included in all editionsGood for trading and basic stock; from Professional plan
Bank feedsStatement import and auto-reconciliation for 250+ banks; live connected banking for Axis, SBI, Kotak and ICICI (needs active TSS)Direct bank feeds on paid plans
AccessDesktop software; access from anywhere needs a cloud setupCloud and mobile by default
Works offlineYesNo
Learning curveKeyboard-driven; fast for trained users, slower for beginnersEasier for non-accountants
IntegrationsLimitedStrong within the Zoho suite

One common belief is outdated: that Tally has no bank automation. Recent TallyPrime releases support automatic bank reconciliation for hundreds of banks and live connected banking for a few major ones. The gap with Zoho on banking is now much smaller than it used to be. The bigger difference today is access: Zoho is cloud-native, while Tally is still a desktop product at heart.

Pricing in 2026

  • TallyPrime Silver (one user at a time): ₹22,500 one-time, or ₹8,100 a year on rental
  • TallyPrime Gold (multiple users on a local network): ₹67,500 one-time, or ₹24,300 a year on rental
  • Tally TSS renewal (updates and connected services, after year one): about ₹4,500 a year for Silver and ₹13,500 for Gold; rental already includes it
  • Zoho Books: Free plan for revenue under ₹25 lakh; Standard about ₹899/month (3 users); Professional about ₹1,499/month (5 users); Premium about ₹2,999/month (10 users)

All prices are before 18% GST. Zoho is priced per organisation, and annual billing works out cheaper than monthly.

The 5-Year Cost Most People Never Calculate

SetupApprox. 5-Year Cost (before GST)
Tally Silver (licence + 4 years TSS)₹40,500
Zoho Books Standard (3 users)₹53,940
Zoho Books Professional (5 users)₹89,940
Tally Gold (licence + 4 years TSS, or 5 years rental)₹1,21,500

For a single person doing the books, Tally Silver is the cheapest option over five years. Once two people need to work at the same time, Tally Gold is required and Zoho Professional becomes clearly cheaper, as long as your team stays within its included users. Interestingly, Tally Gold costs the same over five years whether you buy the licence or rent, so renting costs you almost nothing extra for the flexibility.

Switching From Tally to Zoho: What to Know

Zoho has an official guide for moving from Tally, and you can import your chart of accounts, customers, vendors, items and opening balances. But not everything moves cleanly. Tally-specific settings such as TDS configurations and cost centres often need to be set up again by hand.

The bigger mistake is switching mid-year. That splits one financial year across two systems, which makes audits and GST reconciliation harder. If you switch, do it at the start of a financial year, keep your old Tally data safely backed up, and run both systems side by side for the first month to check the numbers match.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying Tally Silver for a team. Silver allows one user at a time. If you and your accountant need to work together, you need Gold.
  • Letting Tally TSS lapse. The software keeps working, but you lose updates, including GST and statutory changes, and connected banking stops.
  • Building your process on Zoho’s free plan. It only covers revenue under ₹25 lakh and leaves out inventory. Know when you will need to upgrade.
  • Choosing before asking your CA. Your accountant files your returns. Software they don’t know well will cost you more in fees and errors than any subscription saving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zoho Books better than Tally?
Neither is better for everyone. User ratings are nearly identical. Zoho wins on cloud access and ease of use; Tally wins on inventory depth, offline use and familiarity among Indian accountants.

Can I file GST returns from both?
Yes. Both create GST-compliant invoices and support return preparation, e-invoicing and e-way bills.

Does Tally stop working if I don’t renew TSS?
No. A lifetime licence keeps working, but you lose updates and connected services.

Our Verdict

If you are starting a new or service-based business with no strong accountant preference, start on Zoho Books. The free plan and cloud access make it the easier first step. If you run a trading or manufacturing business with real stock, or your CA works on Tally, Tally remains the safer choice.

A note from our side: we have used Tally for our own business for about 10 years, for GST returns, inventory and ledgers. We have considered moving to Zoho more than once. What has kept us on Tally is not a feature; it is that almost every consultant and accountant we work with is a Tally practitioner. That is the factor we would ask any business owner to weigh first.
