e-Shram Card: Real Benefits, Registration & the Myths (2026)

e-Shram Card: Real Benefits, Registration & the Myths (2026)

October 6, 2026

Over 30 crore workers have registered for the e-Shram card, but a genuinely large number of them misunderstand what it actually does. Registration itself doesn’t hand you ₹2 lakh insurance or a monthly pension automatically — and no, there’s no ₹1,000 a month simply for holding the card. Here’s exactly what e-Shram gives you, what it doesn’t, and the two things most guides get wrong.

What the e-Shram Card Actually Is

Launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in August 2021, e-Shram is a national database of unorganised workers — anyone not covered by EPFO, ESIC, or a similar formal scheme: domestic help, construction workers, street vendors, drivers, daily-wage earners, and now gig and platform workers too, following the 2025 Budget announcement extending registration to them.

Registration is completely free and takes a few minutes at eshram.gov.in using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. You receive a 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) — a portable identity that follows you across states and employers for the rest of your life.

The Myth Most People Believe: Is There a Monthly Cash Payment?

No. There is no central e-Shram scheme that pays every cardholder a fixed monthly amount just for being registered. This is a genuinely common and understandable confusion — the card is a gateway to benefits, not a benefit itself. What you actually get depends on which linked schemes you separately enrol in.

The Detail Most Guides Skip: Registration ≠ Automatic Insurance

Many articles describe the ₹2 lakh accident cover under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) as something you get “automatically” upon e-Shram registration. That’s misleading. e-Shram registration makes you eligible — but you still need an active bank or post office savings account with PMSBY enrolment and the annual premium actually being paid via auto-debit. Without that separate step, your e-Shram card alone gives you no insurance cover at all.

What PMSBY Actually Costs and Covers

EventPayout
Accidental death₹2,00,000 to nominee
Permanent total disability (both eyes/hands/feet)₹2,00,000
Permanent partial disability (one eye/hand/foot)₹1,00,000

The premium is ₹20 per year — verified directly from PMSBY’s own official rules, not the incorrect ₹12 figure some sites repeat. It’s auto-debited from your linked account, and the cover runs on a fixed annual cycle: 1 June to 31 May, renewing automatically each year.

The Silent Lapse Nobody Warns You About

Because the ₹20 premium auto-debits on 1 June, if your account balance is too low that day, your cover simply lapses — silently, with no notification. Most people only discover this the hard way, when a claim gets rejected because the policy had already lapsed months earlier. If you’re relying on this cover, check your account balance every year just before 1 June.

The Other Linked Schemes

  • PMJJBY (life insurance): ₹2 lakh cover for death by any cause, not just accidents. Premium ₹436/year, available to ages 18–50 — note this is a narrower age band than e-Shram’s own 16–59 eligibility.
  • PM-SYM (pension): ₹3,000/month after age 60, with the government matching your monthly contribution. Enrolment is open from age 18–40. See our PM-SYM calculator to see your exact contribution.
  • Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY): health cover for SECC-listed eligible families. See our Ayushman Bharat application guide.
  • PM Vishwakarma: skill credit up to ₹3 lakh for traditional artisans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does e-Shram registration give me ₹2 lakh insurance automatically?
No. It makes you eligible for PMSBY, but you must separately enrol through your bank and have the ₹20 annual premium actively paid for the cover to be valid.

Do I get ₹1,000 a month for holding an e-Shram card?
No. There is no central scheme paying a fixed monthly amount simply for registration. Benefits come only from the specific linked schemes you enrol in.

Why did my PMSBY claim get rejected even though I registered years ago?
Your cover likely lapsed silently on a 1 June renewal date when your account balance was too low for the auto-debit. Check your bank statement for the annual ₹20 deduction each year.

Who is eligible for an e-Shram card?
Any unorganised sector worker aged 16–59 not covered by EPFO or ESIC — including domestic workers, drivers, street vendors, construction workers, and now gig/platform workers.
