Personal loans carry the highest interest rates of the three because they’re unsecured. Tenures are shorter (1–5 years), so the EMI is naturally higher relative to the loan amount — factor this in before borrowing for discretionary spending.
Is EMI calculated on a reducing balance or flat rate basis? Nearly all bank loans in India use the reducing balance method, which is what this calculator assumes — interest is charged only on the outstanding principal, not the original loan amount. Some older personal loans and dealer financing schemes still use a flat rate, which results in a higher effective interest rate than advertised.
Does this EMI calculator include processing fees or insurance? No — it calculates the pure EMI based on principal, rate, and tenure. Banks often add a one-time processing fee (commonly 0.5–2% of the loan amount) and may bundle loan insurance, both of which increase your effective cost. Always ask for the total cost breakdown, not just the EMI.
Can I change my EMI after taking a loan? Yes, through prepayment (which reduces either your tenure or your EMI, depending on what you choose) or by refinancing to a lower rate with another lender, known as a balance transfer.
What’s a good EMI-to-income ratio? Most lenders and financial planners suggest keeping total EMI obligations under 40% of your monthly take-home income, though this varies by lender and your other financial commitments.
