For a couple of weeks back in 2021, all the sugar stocks in my portfolio were on a run. I was like, okay, what’s happening, why this sudden surge? Sugar stocks like Rana Sugar were up sharply. I thought it might be rising exports, but that big a rise? Something else was going on.
So I went straight to Google for answers — it turned out the surge was tied to the government’s plan to mix 20% ethanol into petrol. At the time, blending was around 8.5%, and the target date was 2025.
Update: India actually hit the 20% ethanol blending target in 2025 — five years ahead of the original 2030 schedule. The policy that drove this stock rally has now fully played out and is complete, not a future catalyst anymore.
Ethanol has a high level of oxygen and burns cleaner, which helps keep the environment cleaner. It can be produced from sugar cane, potatoes, corn, or other organic material with high sugar content. Since India is one of the largest sugar producers, finding raw materials for ethanol was never going to be the constraint.
Back then, sugar stocks were trading high because more ethanol demand meant more profit for sugar companies — a real, if temporary, catalyst. Small policy changes can move markets in a big way.
Looking back, this is a genuinely useful case study: a real policy-driven stock rally, now fully resolved, that shows how sector-specific catalysts can move a whole group of stocks together — and how important it is to check whether a catalyst is still ahead of you or already priced in before acting on it.
As always: past stock movements aren’t a signal to chase similar rallies today. Do your own current research before investing in any sector.
