Atal Pension Yojana Calculator: Contribution & Pension Guide (2026)

September 30, 2026

If you work in India’s unorganised sector — as a domestic worker, gig worker, daily wage earner, or small shop owner — with no employer-provided pension or provident fund, the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is one of the few genuinely guaranteed retirement income options available to you.

[Use the APY Calculator above ↑] — enter your age and desired pension to see your estimated monthly contribution.

What Is the Atal Pension Yojana?

Launched in June 2015 and regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), APY is a defined-benefit pension scheme — meaning you know exactly what pension you’ll receive, unlike NPS where the final payout depends on market performance. You contribute a fixed amount monthly between ages 18 and 60, and the government guarantees your chosen pension for life starting at 60, topping up the corpus from its own resources if investment returns fall short.

As of April 2026, the scheme has crossed 9 crore total subscribers, with over 1.35 crore new enrollments in FY 2025-26 alone — its highest-ever year for new sign-ups. The Union Cabinet approved extending the scheme through FY 2030-31 in January 2026.

Who Can Join APY?

  • Indian citizens aged 18-40
  • Must have a savings bank account or post office savings account
  • Account must be linked to Aadhaar and a mobile number

The Rule Most People Miss: Income Tax Payers Are Excluded

Since 1 October 2022, anyone who is or has ever been an income tax payer cannot join APY. This is a genuinely important detail a lot of older content online doesn’t reflect. If an account opened after that date is later found to belong to a taxpayer, PFRDA closes the account and returns only the accumulated corpus — no pension guarantee applies. This rule doesn’t affect accounts opened before October 2022.

How the Pension Amount Works

You choose one of five guaranteed pension levels at enrollment: ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000, or ₹5,000 per month, starting at age 60. Your monthly contribution depends on two things — your age at joining and the pension amount you select. The earlier you join, the less you pay, since your money has more years to grow before payout begins.

What Happens to Your Family

APY’s family protection is genuinely strong:

  • If you die before 60, your spouse can either continue contributing until maturity, or close the account and receive the accumulated corpus
  • If both you and your spouse die, your nominee receives the full accumulated pension wealth
  • After your death post-60, your spouse receives the exact same pension amount for life

Missed Payments and Exit Rules

Missing a contribution triggers a small penalty — typically ₹1 to ₹10 per month depending on your contribution size — charged until you clear the dues. Premature exit before 60 is generally only allowed in specific circumstances, since APY is designed as a long-term commitment, not a flexible savings account.

APY vs. NPS: The Key Difference

NPS (National Pension System) offers potentially higher returns since it’s market-linked, but your final payout isn’t guaranteed and depends on fund performance. APY trades that upside for certainty — you know your exact pension from day one, regardless of how markets perform. For workers without access to NPS through an employer, or who prioritize a guaranteed floor over potential higher returns, APY fills a genuine gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can income tax payers join APY?
No — since 1 October 2022, income tax payers are ineligible. This applies to new enrollments only; accounts opened before that date are unaffected.

What’s the maximum pension I can get under APY?
₹5,000 per month starting at age 60, guaranteed by the Government of India regardless of market performance.

What happens if I miss a monthly contribution?
A penalty of ₹1-10 per month applies depending on your contribution amount, charged until you clear the outstanding dues.

Is APY better than NPS?
Neither is universally “better” — APY offers a guaranteed, certain pension with lower potential upside; NPS offers potentially higher, market-linked returns without a guarantee. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize certainty or growth potential, and whether you have access to NPS through an employer.
