Udyam Certificate Update 2026: How to Change Address, NIC Code, Mobile and Other Details (and Why There Is No Renewal)

November 2, 2026

Short answer: to update your Udyam certificate, go to udyamregistration.gov.in, open Update/Cancel Udyam Registration, log in with your Udyam number, the mobile number in your application and an OTP, edit the details, and submit. Then download the fresh certificate from Print / Verify. It is free, and there is no renewal: the Udyam number is permanent. But not everything can be edited. Investment and turnover come from your income tax and GST data, the name follows your PAN records, and if your business changes its PAN (a proprietorship becoming a company, for example), you need a fresh registration, not an update. This guide covers each kind of change and the mistakes that cause trouble later.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Use only the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, for anything involving your registration.

Does Udyam registration need renewal?

No. The notification that created Udyam (S.O. 2119(E) of 26 June 2020) calls the Udyam number a permanent identity number. There is no validity date on the certificate and nothing to renew each year. Any call, SMS or website asking you to pay for “Udyam renewal” is selling you something that does not exist (we cover these in our guide to the Udyam registration fee).

What the notification does require is that you keep the registration updated, including GST and income tax return details for the previous financial year, and it says failure to update can lead to suspension of your status. In practice, most of this now happens automatically: investment and turnover figures are pulled from your ITR and GST data. Your job is to keep the details you typed in yourself, such as address, activities, plants, mobile and email, accurate.

How to update your Udyam certificate online: step by step

  1. Type udyamregistration.gov.in into your browser yourself.
  2. From the top menu, choose Update/Cancel Udyam Registration (also listed under Update Details).
  3. Enter your Udyam number in the full format, UDYAM-XX-00-0000000, with capitals and hyphens.
  4. Enter the mobile number as filled in your application, and choose whether to receive the OTP on that mobile or on the application email.
  5. Click Validate & Generate OTP, enter the OTP, and click Validate OTP & Login.
  6. Open the update option, change the fields you need, tick the declaration and submit.
  7. Go to Print / Verify → Print Udyam Certificate and download the updated certificate. Replace the old copy wherever you have shared it: your bank, your buyers’ vendor records, GeM or TReDS.

If you cannot log in because you do not have the number, or the OTP goes to someone else’s phone, start with our guide on recovering a forgotten Udyam registration number.

What you can change, and where each change really happens

DetailHow to change it
Mobile number and emailOn the Udyam portal, after logging in. Do this first if they belong to an agent or an old phone.
Official address, unit or plant addressOn the Udyam portal. If you have GST, update the GST registration too, so the two match.
Adding a new plant, unit or branchOn the Udyam portal. A new location is added to the same registration, not registered separately.
Business activities (NIC codes)On the Udyam portal. Add or correct codes on the same registration.
Bank account, employees, social category and similar detailsOn the Udyam portal.
Investment and turnoverNot typed in. They come from your ITR and GST data. If they are wrong, the fix is in your returns.
Name of the enterpriseThe legal name follows PAN records (and the ROC for companies and LLPs). Correct it at the source first.
PAN, or type of organisation (proprietorship to partnership, LLP or company)Not an update. A new entity with a new PAN needs a fresh Udyam registration, and the old one should be cancelled.

Change of address in Udyam

Moved your shop, office or factory? Update both the official address and the unit address on the Udyam portal. If you are registered under GST, file the GST amendment for your principal place of business too. Banks and buyers compare documents, and a Udyam certificate showing one address while your GST certificate and invoices show another invites questions, especially at loan time. If your new premises are rented or belong to a family member, our guide to premises documents for GST registration explains what the GST side needs.

Shifting to another state or district does not give you a new Udyam number. The state and district codes inside the number stay as they were when it was issued. That is normal, and the updated address on the certificate is what counts.

Adding or correcting NIC codes

NIC codes describe what your business does, and they decide how you are treated. Udyam’s FAQs say up to 10 NIC codes can be added in one registration. Two reasons to review them now:

  • You started a new activity. A trader who now does job work, or a service business that now manufactures, should add the new activity to the same registration. Do not open a second registration for it. One PAN can have only one Udyam registration.
  • The agent picked the wrong code. This is common when registration was done in a hurry. A manufacturer or service provider registered only under a trading code can lose out: the government has said retail and wholesale traders are covered only for priority-sector lending, and are not eligible for the MSMED Act’s delayed-payment protection. If you actually manufacture or provide services, correct the codes. Our guide to MSME delayed payment complaints explains what that protection is worth.

Correct codes only to match what you really do. The notification makes intentional misrepresentation of self-declared facts liable to a penalty under Section 27 of the MSMED Act.

Changing the mobile number or email

This is the most useful update most businesses never make. The portal sends every OTP, for certificate downloads, updates and number recovery, only to the mobile and email in your application. If those belong to a CA, an agent, a former employee or a phone you no longer use, change them while you still can. You need an OTP on one of the two to log in: the login lets you choose the email instead of the mobile, so a dead phone is not a problem as long as the email still works.

Investment and turnover look wrong, or your category changed

You cannot type these figures in if you file ITR and GST returns. Investment is the written-down value of plant and machinery or equipment from your income tax return, and turnover comes from your ITR and GST data, with export turnover excluded. Multiple GSTINs under the same PAN are added together. If the numbers on your certificate look off, the cause is usually in the returns (a missing depreciation schedule, or turnover reported under the wrong head), so speak to whoever files them.

Since 1 April 2025, the limits are (Notification S.O. 1364(E) of 21 March 2025):

CategoryInvestment up toTurnover up to
Micro₹2.5 crore₹10 crore
Small₹25 crore₹100 crore
Medium₹125 crore₹500 crore

Crossing either limit moves you up a category. If that happens, you do not lose everything overnight: an enterprise that moves up keeps the non-tax benefits of its earlier category for three years from the date of the upward change. If you move down a category, you stay in the current one until the end of the financial year, and the lower category applies from the following 1 April. In both cases the portal reclassifies you; you do not have to apply.

Proprietorship became a partnership or company? That is not an update

Udyam registration is tied to PAN. When a proprietorship becomes a partnership firm, an LLP or a private limited company, the new entity has its own PAN, so it is a new enterprise for Udyam purposes. Register the new entity afresh, using the authorised signatory’s Aadhaar and the new PAN, and cancel the old registration from the same Update/Cancel menu, choosing the reason that fits (such as change of ownership or restructuring). The same applies when a partnership firm is dissolved and one partner carries on the business alone. If you are still deciding on a structure, weigh this paperwork in early: every change of constitution means a new PAN, new GST registration and new Udyam registration.

When to cancel instead of update

Cancel the registration when the business has closed for good, when the entity has changed (as above), or when a duplicate registration was created by mistake. Cancellation is done online from the same Update/Cancel Udyam Registration login. Once cancelled, the number cannot be revived; if you restart later, it is a fresh registration. Do not cancel just to “start clean” after an error you can fix through an update.

Checklist: review your Udyam certificate once a year

  • Mobile and email are yours and still active
  • Official and unit addresses match your GST registration and invoices
  • Every plant, godown or branch you operate is listed
  • NIC codes cover everything you actually do
  • Investment, turnover and category look right after your ITR is filed
  • Bank account details are current
  • The latest certificate PDF is saved and shared with your bank and key buyers

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fee to update the Udyam certificate?
No. Updating, reprinting and downloading the certificate are free on the government portal.

What is the validity of a Udyam certificate?
It has no expiry date. The Udyam number is permanent, provided you keep the details updated.

Will my Udyam number change after an update?
No. The number stays the same even if you change your address, add plants, or add activities. Only a new entity with a new PAN gets a new number.

Can I update Udyam without the registered mobile number?
Yes, if you still have access to the email in the application: choose the email OTP at login, then change the mobile. If you have lost both, see the recovery routes in our forgot Udyam number guide.

I have an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM). Can I update that?
Old UAM registrations are no longer valid for MSME benefits. Register on Udyam using the portal’s option for existing UAM holders, and you will get a Udyam number you can update from then on.

My turnover crossed ₹10 crore this year. Do I lose MSME status?
You move from micro to small, but you remain an MSME. And for an upward move, the notification lets you keep the non-tax benefits of your earlier category for three years.
