Udyam Registration Fee in 2026: It’s Free. What Paid Sites Charge For, and What to Do If You Already Paid

November 1, 2026

Short answer: the Udyam registration fee is zero. Registration, the certificate, downloading it again, updating it and recovering a forgotten number all cost nothing on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. The portal itself says the process is “totally free” and that “no costs or fees are to be paid to anyone”. Yet a search for “Udyam registration fee” still throws up sites quoting ₹499 to a few thousand rupees. This guide explains what those sites are actually selling, how to tell them apart from the government portal, how to register yourself in about fifteen minutes, and what to do if you have already paid someone.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Use only the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, for anything involving your registration.

What the government actually charges

Service on udyamregistration.gov.inGovernment fee
New Udyam registration₹0
Udyam certificate (first copy, reprints, PDF download)₹0
Updating details (address, NIC code, mobile, email, bank)₹0
Moving an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) to Udyam₹0
Recovering a forgotten Udyam number₹0
“Renewal”Does not exist. Udyam has no expiry.

There is no payment page anywhere on the official portal. If a website asks you to pay before it shows you a certificate, you are not on the government site.

So what are the paid “Udyam registration” sites selling?

They fall into three groups, and it helps to know which one you are looking at.

  • Look-alike sites. These copy the government portal’s colours, the Ashoka emblem style and words like “Udyam”, “MSME” or “Udyog Aadhaar” in the domain name, and often run as ads above the real result. You fill a form that looks official, pay, and someone files the free application on your behalf. In September 2022, PIB Fact Check publicly called out one such site, eudyogaadhaar.org, which was asking for ₹2,700 just to “print” the registration certificate.
  • Online filing services. Legal-services and compliance websites advertise Udyam packages, commonly “starting at ₹499”. They are open about being private, but what you pay is entirely their service charge, since there is no government fee to pass on.
  • Your local CA, accountant or cyber café. They may charge for their time when they register you along with other work. That is a normal service charge. The registration itself is still free.

Paying someone for help is your choice. The problem is when you pay because you think it is a government fee, or when the helper files your registration with their own phone number and email, which happens often.

“Only authorised portal”: what the government says

The Udyam portal carries a “Beware of Fake Sites” warning and states that, except for that portal of the Government of India and the government’s Single Window Systems, no other private online or offline system, service, agency or person is authorised to do MSME registration. In other words, no private website is an official Udyam centre, however official it looks. State MSME departments repeat the same message. Madhya Pradesh’s MSME department, for example, has posted that Udyam registration is “100% FREE” and that no agency or consultant can charge a fee.

How to spot a fake Udyam site in ten seconds

  • Check the address bar, not the logo. The real portal ends in .gov.in: udyamregistration.gov.in. Anything ending in .org, .com, .in, .co.in or .net is private, even if it has “udyam” in the name.
  • It asks for payment. The government portal has no payment gateway at all.
  • It shows a helpline or WhatsApp number up front, or a countdown timer telling you to “register now”.
  • It asks you to upload documents. The official portal says no documents or proof need to be uploaded. Your details are fetched from Aadhaar, PAN and GST records.
  • It came as an ad. Results marked “Sponsored” above the real portal are the most common route to look-alike sites. Type the address yourself.

The “Udyam renewal” charge you should never pay

A common follow-up is a call, SMS or email a year later saying your Udyam certificate is “due for renewal”. It isn’t. The notification that created Udyam (S.O. 2119(E) of 26 June 2020) calls the Udyam number a permanent identity number. There is nothing to renew. What the notification does require is that you keep your details updated, including GST and income tax return information; it says failure to update can lead to suspension of your status. Most of that data is pulled automatically from PAN and GST records. Updating anything else is free through the portal’s Update Details option.

Register yourself free: what you need and the steps

Most small businesses can do this themselves. Keep these ready:

  • Aadhaar of the proprietor (for a proprietorship), the managing partner (partnership firm), the Karta (HUF), or the authorised signatory (company, LLP, society, trust or co-operative), with the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar on hand for the OTP
  • PAN of the business (the proprietor’s own PAN for a proprietorship)
  • GSTIN, if your business is required to be registered under GST
  • Bank account number and IFSC, business address, date of starting the business, number of employees, and your main business activities (used to pick NIC codes)
  1. Type udyamregistration.gov.in into your browser.
  2. Click For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME (or the separate option for those already holding a UAM, if you have an old Udyog Aadhaar).
  3. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name as on Aadhaar, give consent and validate with the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  4. Choose the type of organisation and enter the PAN. The portal validates it against income tax records.
  5. Fill in the form: use your own mobile number and your own email, enterprise name, address, bank details, activity and NIC codes, employees and other details. Investment and turnover figures are taken from PAN and GST records automatically.
  6. Submit with the final OTP. The Udyam number is issued, and you can download the certificate from Print / Verify → Print Udyam Certificate.

The single most important line in that list is the mobile and email. They are what the portal uses for every future OTP, and if they belong to an agent, you will struggle later. If that has already happened to you, see our guide on what to do if you forgot your Udyam registration number, which covers changing the contact details to your own.

No PAN or GST? The Udyam Assist Platform

Very small informal businesses, such as street vendors or home-based workers without PAN or GST, cannot use the normal Udyam form. For them the government runs the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP), which registers informal micro enterprises with the help of designated agencies such as banks, NBFCs and SIDBI. It is linked from the Udyam portal’s homepage, and it is also free. If someone offers you “UAP registration” for a fee, the same caution applies.

Already paid an agent or a look-alike site? Do this

  1. Check whether a real registration exists. If they gave you a number, verify it on the portal’s Print / Verify → Verify Udyam Registration Number page. A genuine number starts with UDYAM- and the page shows your enterprise name.
  2. Take control of the contact details. Download the certificate and see whose mobile and email were used. If they are not yours, log in through Update Details and change them. Our Udyam number recovery guide explains how.
  3. Do not register again. The notification says no enterprise shall file more than one Udyam registration. A duplicate creates problems with banks, buyers and the government’s MSME portals.
  4. If you were misled into thinking it was a government fee, ask the site for a refund in writing and keep the payment receipt and screenshots. If they refuse, lodge a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline (dial 1915 or use consumerhelpline.gov.in).
  5. If you were cheated outright (paid and got nothing, or were asked for repeated “processing” payments), report it on the national cybercrime portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or call 1930, and inform your bank or UPI app about the transaction quickly. Fast reporting improves the chances of the money being frozen before it moves.

When paying for help actually makes sense

To be fair to good accountants: there are cases where a small fee for professional help is money well spent. If you are not sure which NIC codes describe your business, whether you are a manufacturer or a service provider, or how your figures will be classified as micro, small or medium, a CA who already handles your GST and income tax can get it right the first time. Those choices affect what you can claim later, such as the delayed-payment protection that is not available to traders. Just make sure they file it with your mobile and email, and that you get the certificate PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is Udyam registration really free?
Yes. The official portal states that registration is free of cost and that no costs or fees are to be paid to anyone. That covers the certificate, updates and reprints too.

What does “Udyam registration zero cost” mean?
It is the wording the government portal itself uses to tell people the registration is free. It is not a special scheme or a separate registration. There is only one Udyam registration, and it always costs nothing.

Is there a fee for the Udyam certificate?
No. You can download and print the certificate as many times as you like from Print / Verify → Print Udyam Certificate, with an OTP on the mobile or email in your application.

Do I have to renew my Udyam registration every year?
No. The Udyam number is permanent. You only need to keep the details up to date, and that is free.

Is a private site that charges ₹499 illegal?
Charging for help is not the same as charging a government fee, and many paid services are open about being private. But the portal is clear that no private agency is authorised to do MSME registration on the government’s behalf, and a site that dresses itself up as the government portal is misleading you. If you would rather have help, use a professional you know.

Do I need Udyam registration before I get GST?
No. They are separate, and CBIC has told GST officers not to ask for an Udyam certificate during GST registration. See our guide on the premises documents you do need for GST registration.

Once you have your Udyam number, it pays for itself the first time a buyer delays payment: micro and small enterprises can claim interest and file a complaint online, as our guide to MSME delayed payment complaints explains. It also helps with bank loans such as a Mudra loan.
